A guided walking tour of the Tocal Homestead precinct, part of History Week NSW 2010. Starts at the Tocal Visitor Centre at 1.30. The guided tour is free but normal site admission fee applies. Bring comfortable walking shoes and a hat. Seating is not provided. Join us for a one-hour guided walking tour of the Tocal Homestead precinct showcasing individuals who lived on the Tocal estate between 1822 and 1947, from workers to the wealthy. They include convicts, the notorious bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, generations of the Kidd family, their wealthy masters the Reynolds, and the mildly eccentric Alexanders. Historians Brian Walsh and David Brouwer will conduct the guided tour. Brian will reveal fascinating insights into the lifestyle and behaviour of Tocal's convicts. David will bring to life the exploits of the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt who used to work at Tocal before returning to steal a mob of horses. David will also discuss others who lived and worked at Tocal through to the mid 1900s. Tocal is one of the best heritage sites in Australia on which to experience colonial lifestyles and working conditions on a country estate. It contains extensive and well preserved evidence of layers of human occupation and endeavour from the 1820s right through to modern times. These guided walking tours are part of History Week. Over 150 events will be held in NSW between 4 and 12 Sept 2010 under the theme "Faces in the Street". 28 November 2010Tocal Homestead closes for weekend visits (it is closed during summer).
