As you begin this drive take a moment to scan the Tocal landscape. Tocal stretches over the horizon in front of you for 10km and contains a diverse range of ecosystems. This short drive takes in the wetlands and river flats – there are several information panels along the way. The low-lying area below this point was an important resource to the Aboriginal people who harvested plants and animals from the surrounding area. The range of ecosystems (from rainforest along the river, to the wetland in front of you and the surrounding paperbark forest) provided a range of materials, and access to fresh water. This area was cleared by early settlers for building materials, to allow grazing of stock and for the establishment of crops such as wheat and tobacco. Below: photo of part of Tocal's wetlands
Drive the drive: you can drive the wetlands drive when Tocal Homestead is open to the public (Homestead admission fee applies) - opening details. |
