In the past, before council rubbish tips and before regular garbage collection, rubbish was often dumped over the river bank or in gullies – 'out of sight out of mind'. Today it is hard for us to understand how anyone could think it a harmless practice. ![]() Try to imagine what life was like on properties like Tocal in the 1800s and early 1900s. The early residents on Tocal were isolated and needed to be quite self sufficient. They had to make many of the items that they needed, from bread and butter to gate latches and house repairs. They reused and recycled where possible - these shelves in the stone barn were built from a packing crate and oil cans. Eventually some items were discarded and dumped at sites like this. Please leave all items as you found them. Walk the walk: you can walk along Pumby Brush walk when Tocal Homestead is open to the public (Homestead admission fee applies) - opening details. |
